Many thanks for these thoughts ... it is good to know this is the place to start.
JodyAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8438349.post-19307073240474861222009-02-24T00:09:00.000+13:002009-02-24T00:09:00.000+13:00I forgot to say Jody.Start each group session with...I forgot to say Jody.

Start each group session with a 'class intro' session to ensure all know what to do.

'Wrap up' each session with a few reflective thoughts about how it went and ideas for 'next time'.Bruce Hammondshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07031065790535111400noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8438349.post-89501692332756153872009-02-24T00:03:00.000+13:002009-02-24T00:03:00.000+13:00I think you may have a booklet of mine on classroo...I think you may have a booklet of mine on classroom management - if so it might help.

A few thoughts in the meantime.

1 Keep time for group work limited until the class ( and you) get used to it.

2 Only have one group actively involved with you -the others need activities they can do without you. At first it doesn't matter how limited these tasks are - you can 'up the anti' as they ( and you) get better at it. Your group task cards might be useful

3 Some of the other groups could be completing work already drafted out as part of your language programme e.g. researched answers for a finished copy.

4 Define all group tasks on the whiteboard to ensure all know: what, why and when. Have a few extra tasks for fast finishers - that will encourage them to do things well!

As mentioned for other tasks they should aready know 'how' - taught in the language block.

This model of group teaching is the same as the reading organisation.

List all the things they can do for themselves - this might help when planning group tasks. Or teach things they can't do in language block.

But I am still thinking.Bruce Hammondshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07031065790535111400noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8438349.post-53681130836223319252009-02-23T18:45:00.000+13:002009-02-23T18:45:00.000+13:00Thank you, that is nice feedback to hear. We are involved in quality learning circles this year so I thought for my first project to improve my own teaching and make it more effective for the children in my class this was an area for immediate attention! Looking forward to this upcoming post. What about the 'group roles cards' for structure to begin with??? Of use, or just a distraction??? What do you think
Many thanks
JodyAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8438349.post-36429591537366951692009-02-22T10:08:00.000+13:002009-02-22T10:08:00.000+13:00Hi JodyI will do as you say - working collaborativ...Hi Jody

I will do as you say - working collaboratively in groups that involve all students is the challenge. This depends on the quality of the task and the skills ( competencies) of students And, of course, how to assess both group tasks and individual contributions. The proof is aways in the pudding.

Rethinking the structure of how time is used is part of the answer. We need to look at how we aportion time and our energy - far too much time is used for literacy and numeracy but for what purpose?

I heard, from a visitor to your school, you all are doing great things with inquiry teaching!Bruce Hammondshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07031065790535111400noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8438349.post-86246629256524531732009-02-22T09:50:00.000+13:002009-02-22T09:50:00.000+13:00Hi Bruce,I know you talk about groups for this inq...Hi Bruce,
I know you talk about groups for this inquiry and I would be interested (and it would be most helpful to me) if you wrote a post about how this might 'look' in the classroom over a week or two. I have in mind to make this my immediate goal to change in my class and get to some deeper inquiry. I can see how working with groups rather than the whole class would assist meeting the needs of individual children but I cannot quite work out how to structure this in as planned time - any thoughts would be most appreciated
Kind regards
JodyAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
